Socialist Candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier Defeats Democratic Incumbent

A socialist candidate, known for her controversial views, has won the Democratic nomination in New York’s 13th Congressional District. Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five-term Democratic incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y. This victory was supported by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Avila Chevalier, 32, is a community organizer with a degree from Columbia University. She gained attention for her membership in Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a group that once posted provocative statements on social media. Her victory signals a shift towards more progressive ideas in her district.

Avila Chevalier’s stances on key issues showcase her left-leaning ideology. In past social media posts, she criticized private property and police, advocated for nationalizing private industries, and called for the abolition of borders. These views, often considered extreme, have been deleted but continue to influence her public image.

A supporter and endorser of Avila Chevalier, Zohran Mamdani, defends her despite controversies. He acknowledges her evolving views and campaign objectives. Her platform includes freeing New Yorkers unjustly detained by ICE and advocating for those marginalized in politics.

The district, NY-13, covers Upper Manhattan and part of the West Bronx. It has consistently voted Democratic, making Avila Chevalier a strong contender for the upcoming general election. With her new position, she aims to represent the progressive Democratic agenda in the district.

The outcome of November’s election could further shape the political landscape in a district that has historically been a Democratic stronghold.
