Former General Compares Trump’s Iran Strategy to Nixon’s Vietnam Tactics

Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg has drawn a connection between President Donald Trump’s recent dealings with Iran and President Richard Nixon’s historic military strategy with North Vietnam. Speaking on Hannity, Kellogg noted Trump’s use of forceful tactics to bring Iran to the negotiating table.

Kellogg observed that Trump’s application of “kinetic strikes” has played a role in re-engaging Iran in diplomatic discussions. These actions are similar to those seen during Nixon’s 1972 “Linebacker II” bombing campaign, which helped break a stalemate with North Vietnam.

The bombing that he took, the kinetic strikes, actually brought the Iranians to the table. It’s not the first time we’ve ever done that.

Nixon’s approach in 1972 involved intense bombardments of Hanoi and Haiphong to pressure North Vietnam back to peace talks. This operation lasted almost two weeks, focusing on military targets.

Earlier this week, the U.S. retaliated against Iran for downing an American Apache helicopter. On Thursday, Trump canceled further planned strikes, citing possible advancements toward a peace deal.

Kellogg believes Trump’s strategy with Iran reflects the Nixon-era tactics. He stated, “Trump is very determined to get a result,” emphasizing the goal to dismantle Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Kellogg highlighted Iran’s rapid uranium enrichment, warning that it poses a significant threat for Middle East stability.

To emphasize the broader impact, Kellogg expressed concern that many Americans overlook the long-term implications for future generations. He stressed the importance of securing peace in the Middle East for years to come.

On Saturday, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced potential progress toward a U.S.-Iran peace deal, expected to be finalized within a day. Pakistan has played a mediating role in the negotiations.

Sharif’s message on social media expressed hope that the peace deal would lay the groundwork for enduring peace. He acknowledged the contributions of the U.S., Iran, and regional partners in moving the talks forward.

The collaborative efforts in mediating the conflict have brought the parties closer to agreement, aiming for lasting stability in the region.
