Inglewood, Calif. — Folarin Balogun scored twice in a stunning showcase of American soccer at the World Cup opener against Paraguay. The game marked a triumphant return to U.S. soil for the world’s biggest soccer tournament. Balogun’s performance led the American team to a remarkable 4-1 victory on Friday night, their first World Cup at home in 32 years.

Christian Pulisic contributed strongly with an assist, driving the Americans to a 3-0 lead in the first half, a record for the team in World Cup history. Pulisic expressed the significance of the match, noting the excitement from fans and the impressive play that had everyone captivated.

Gio Reyna added a final goal in the last moments, achieving four goals for the U.S. in a single World Cup match for the first time since 1930. This commanding win contrasts sharply with prior American performances on the international stage, where goals were scarce, including their 2022 World Cup appearance in Qatar.

The U.S. team showed a new level of confidence and dominance under coach Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership, particularly in front of a lively crowd of 70,492 in Los Angeles. Pochettino, hired in late 2024, emphasized focusing on the present, elated by the fans’ enthusiasm.

Despite some challenges, including Pulisic’s precautionary substitution at halftime due to tightness in his calf, the U.S. kept up their dynamic play. Pulisic assured it was not a serious issue.

While Paraguay managed a goal in the second half, their comeback was too late. Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro acknowledged the U.S. team’s tactical and physical prowess, highlighting their ability to adapt under pressure.

Balogun, making his World Cup debut, was pivotal in the U.S. attack. His decision to represent the U.S. has quickly paid off, showcasing the striker talent previously missing from American rosters.

Pulisic’s runs sparked the early lead, involving clever play that led to an own-goal by Paraguay. Balogun’s first-half goals were key, with assistance from Pulisic and Malik Tillman. Despite Pulisic’s absence in the second half, Reyna completed the victory with his first World Cup goal.

The game attracted numerous American celebrities, adding to the electric atmosphere at SoFi Stadium.
