Tim Allen Reflects on Fatherhood and Sobriety

Tim Allen recently shared his candid thoughts on fatherhood, his regrets, and the impact of his 30-year sobriety in an interview with US Weekly. Allen admitted that becoming a father was not an aspiration of his, describing his journey as a continuous learning process.

I never really wanted to be a dad. I joke about it on stage; I’ve just never been a real fan of children. There’s no preparation like a license when it comes to parenting.

Allen has two daughters: Katherine Allen, from his first marriage to Laura Deibel, and Elizabeth Allen-Dick, with his current wife, Jane Hajduk. Jane expressed a desire for more children, believing that the learning curve with parenting improves after the first two.

Allen acknowledged his frequent absence during Katherine’s upbringing. Having grown up with seven brothers and two sisters, he recognizes a different perspective on raising daughters. “Girl-related activities never held much interest for me. I focused on teaching finances and self-care, which apply to both sons and daughters,” he remarked.

Allen sees the special bond with his daughters as they remind him of the lessons he imparted that resonated with them. He noted, “We communicate on a different level, and sometimes I’m surprised by how much they actually listened.”

His sobriety has been a significant part of his life. Allen openly discussed how he was not sober during some crucial years of his eldest daughter’s life. He has since made amends and appreciates the chance to show his younger daughter a different side of himself.

With the younger one, I’ve been sober almost 30 years. She never knew any of that guy. I’ve talked to Kate, and she doesn’t hold it against me.

Reflecting on his past, Allen recalled a troubled period after college which included a prison term. He used this time to pivot, reading about successful individuals and planning a new path for himself. “I did not want to repeat that mistake. I disgraced my family, friends, and myself, and I resolved not to let it happen again,” he stated.
